This year, Seollal falls on Wednesday, January 29th. Typically, the Seollal holiday includes the day before and after Seollal. Seollal is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. However, with January 27th declared a temporary holiday, the 2025 Seollal holiday will span an extended break from Monday, January 27th to Thursday, January 30th.
During Seollal, it is centered on family reunions, food and placating the ancestors.
Eating 떡국 Tteokguk, a rice cake soup, is also part of the celebrations. It's usually eaten during new year celebrations as it symbolizes that you are one year older.
